I do not see any harm of using games like this one in classes. Prensky (2006) who argues that they tend to be boring and repetitive, consisting mainly of drill and skill activities or as he calls it, “drill and kill”. If this is the view of an expert then we should see what we can do take this as an advice and turn the use of games to a something useful and meaningful to students. Offcourse we can’t have games everyday, this activity requires planning too. Some times students get bored and they would love to have a change, then a game like Lemon Tycoon can be used to build in them ideas and desire to be productive members in the future.
Finally, after U got my computer fixed I was able to download the game Lemonade Tycoon and watch it. I found this game easy to use and comprehend pretty straight forward. It would direct the student easily through the game. It is a structured game which will increase the level of challenges that student going to face which makes it interesting.
In this game the student notice and learn how to manage many aspect of establishing a lemonade business, also how to prepare a recipe, set prices, sell lemonade in different locations, how to keep an eye on changing of weather, supplies, advertising, stock exchange and follow the news. Plus, with the amount of money he’s got how he should spend it wisely while managing his business. Most importantly, the he has to come up with creative skills to make the most profit out of every work day.
In this game, the student will learn how to monitor the weather and read the news headlines in order to evaluate the consumer trends and try to attract the most customers. Then estimate how much ingredients he is going to buy, set his price and wait for the sales to come. Also, decide where he wants to invest his money in upgrade in order to increase sales and productivity.
So, to be able to sell lemonades, he will learn that they have to buy supplies which are sugar, lemons, ice cubes and cups; of which they have to have enough to start the day and make one pitcher of lemonade. Also, that ice melts without refrigeration and both sugar and lemons. Once the student decides the right amount of supplies depending on the weather, then he has to prepare the right recipe of all the required ingredients depending on the weather as well because you need different amounts of ingredients for the recipe. Then he would need to set the right price for the day to make profit, the hotter it is the more people will be willing to pay which is an advantage for you. Also, he has to evaluate the location of his stand whether you could invest their money somewhere else to make more profit and at the same time invest your money on advertising which will increase the number of customers. Keep in mind that the student has an option of upgrades available to them to use which include kind of stands, juice machine, shade maker, cash register, fridge, lighting and ice maker.
In this game, students can learn logical thinking, evaluating, planning, mathematical methods, structure and creativity. This game as you can see, it motivates the student positively.
This game allows players to be producers not just consumers. At the end of the day, if you sell the right lemonade mix to the right people at the right place and time, then you'll be the Lemonade Tycoon.
